Black Friday

It is so interesting to me how days get named.

The day’s name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.  Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that “Black Friday” indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or are “in the black”. -Wikipedia

The fact that our language, and in fact all language, is a growing and changing entity is so fascinating. I have reached an age where I can remember when some out-of-date words were in common use, like pocketbook, billfold, and drainboard. I’ve seen terms become moot like typewriter and record player. And, heaven knows, I seen many, many words, especially technology related, join our vocabulary.

Children don’t know, because of their limited personal history, that language grows and changes. It is a fun topic to explore! It is also fun to realize there is a “classroom vernacular” developing within your own classroom. Most every example in my classroom include Fred and his elephants. The kids come to expect it, and love it.

My Teachers Notebook shop is 25%  off today through Monday.  Plus TN will have 10% off everything Saturday through Monday.

The big Cyber Sale begins on Monday at Teachers Pay Teachers. My sale starts Sunday in case you want a head start!

I have also promised December Holiday Word of the Day cards. Here’s today’s card.

Coming Monday! (Although my sale starts on Sunday!! If you just can’t

wait!) My whole store is on sale and I have many new items for winter.

I am thankful….

I have an incredible amount of things to be thankful for in my life. First and foremost is my family. I have been blessed by the constant love of a wonderful man. The most amazing result of that love is our three incredible children. They are and always have been the most special people. I love you! My mom and siblings, and almost innumerable nieces and nephews add to my joy in life.

Something that I shamefully do not thank God for often enough is that I am not wanting for any material comfort. I can have not only what I need, but even mostly whatever I want.

I am thankful for the strength of character that got me off my butt and to Curves 629 times in the past 27 months. The improvement in my health and energy level has been fantastic.

Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow.  ~Edward Sandford Martin

Word of the Day: Gratitude

Posted by on Nov 14, 2012 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.

– John Milton

Wow, I love the vocabulary of this quote! I’ve been missing my everyday epiphanies lately. I’ve been letting busyness interfere with my joy of doing the things that keep me busy.

So let me say here, I have so many things to be grateful for.

I have a husband, who just last month, bought me a beautiful pearl  pendant and then was ready to allow the salesman to talk him into another until I let him off the hook and told him I am happy. He is always so generous in his love for me.

I have three wonderful adult children. I would like to proclaim them the best kids ever. They were always friends and unkind words were rarely spoken and never shouted in my house.

I come from an amazing, large, loving, growing family. I have 8 siblings here and 1 in heaven that are close and caring. Over 75 people can claim me as aunt. I have an 88 year old mother who is still my inspiration and my rock.

My teaching career in its thirty-fifth year is still fresh and exciting to me. I still want to create new things and have new ideas and find new ways to push kids into loving learning. I am fulfilled by knowing that they are growing under my care and that I can tell (at least for a year) I am important to their lives.

None of this was supposed to happen. I was diagnosed with bone cancer 41 years ago and given a year to live. How is it that I can forget for even a day to be thankful for all the joy that has been poured over me all these years?

Go hug someone you love!
