Compass Talk

Posted by on Aug 12, 2012 in Uncategorized | 4 comments

pstearns suggested to me that my “Simple Glyph about Me” could be used as a compass rose lesson. What a great idea! So, with a few changes to the original, I have created one:

I considered using the words “northern triangle,” “southern triangle,” etc., but I felt that in keeping with Marzan’s 4-14-40 idea I should present the simpler words for students to see and hear over again.

And then the word “intermediate” is one my students really have a hard time grasping, so I created a Word of the Day card for it. (This card is not part of set 1, it is most likely the first card for set 8.)

Help Me Choose

I am working on a new (but very similar) vocabulary product. I am using Marzano’s 30-word core-content vocabulary. Robert Marzano suggests that since it takes our struggling learners 40+ exposures to a new word for them to own it, we should teach 30 core words in each subject area. I am taking those 30 words and making cards similar to my Word of the Day cards. These will be available in two 15-word sets per content area (science, social studies, language arts, and math). I am planning to do them for grades 2–5. Here’s where I need help. Would you rather have these cards in black and white or with color?

4-14-40 Method

“Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” —Bo Derek

Robert Marzano, a guru of vocabulary instruction, tells us that the bright kids need about 4 exposures to a word to own it, average students need about 14, and our struggling students need at least 40. How can we expose our students to words this often? There are so many words and there is never enough time.

My friend and teammate, Linda, suggested she would use my Word of the Day cards as a challenge each day. After spending a few minutes to discuss the word, she is planning to reward children for a correct use of the WoD either orally or in writing throughout the day. This sounds like fun and reminds me of a very old game show.

I am including a fun partner game for vocabulary practice. This would also be useful in small groups. It gives the students many opportunities to use and learn new words.

Vocabulary Cubes pdf

Directions for Vocabulary Cubes:

Choose 6 words that the students need to practice. Students write the six words in random order on their paper and do not share the order with the others.

Each group needs two dice. The roll of the first die determines which word will be used. The roll of the second die determines which strategy the student will use to share the word. The other student(s) try to determine which word is being presented.

More Word of the Day cards are available here on my blog and also at my TpT store.

Things are about to launch! I have a team-leader meeting in 90 minutes. It is hard to believe I am going to be back into the school routine soon. I love this time of the year. I still have time to act on the fun ideas that are popping into my head. I can make something cute and/or clever for my classroom. I anticipate my new group and begin writing their names over and over. I see my friends and catch up on their lives. (Well, anyway, whatever hasn’t been posted on Facebook.)

Your students are getting launched into a new year, too. How do you help them get ready? What is the needed vocabulary for the first day? How will they know who you are and that you care about who they are? Here is an activity for the first day. It gives the students a chance to write about their thoughts. You should also give them plenty of time to talk about their thoughts with their classmates and with you.

Another launch is happening, too! TpT and I are having a Back to School Sale! It is Saturday and Sunday!

Our Journey

More cards available at my TpT store.

I’m back from my trek north to a family wedding. We were stranded last Thursday for 10 and 1/2 hours at the airport. I longed for a computer, but instead I read an entire novel.

The wedding was lovely. Leaving was heart-wrenching. My mom is aging and having some scary health issues.

Sorry I was without access to the internet for posting my word of the day cards! (I did peek at my son’s smartphone twice in 6 days.)

Exciting news! A sale at TpT is coming up on Sunday and Monday. Everything in my store is on sale, plus use the code below for an additional 10% off!
